Ritz, in petrol and diesel, will be the India's first BS-IV compliant

India's number one carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Limited is set to launch India's first BS-IV compliant passenger car, Ritz, on May 15.

Ritz is a tallboy hatchback, positioned in the premium A2 market segment. The Maruti Suzuki Ritz, adopts a contemporary European design and is positioned at the growing premium-end of the compact car market.

Ritz will be the first passenger car in India to be compliant with the BS-IV emission norms, in petrol as well as diesel variants. This is many months ahead of the BS-IV norms being applicable in India, reinforcing Maruti Suzuki's leadership position.

With Ritz, MSIL aims to consolidate its leadership in the highly competitive compact car segment. The company commands the largest market share of 58 per cent in the A2 segment.

Being a car meant for the family, the Ritz has received special attention in the area of seating comfort. The rear seat has been designed for comfortable seating of 3 passengers.

The suspension of the vehicle with a ground clearance of 170 mm has been tuned for Indian road conditions.

Ritz is MSIL's eighth new model within 48 months following the launch of Swift, Zen Estilo, SX4, Swift Diesel, Grand Vitara, Swift Dzire and A-star. In the A-2 segment, Ritz will be the 7th offering for the customers by Maruti Suzuki.

The Ritz combines modern European design, the sportiness of the Swift, the latest in engine technology and Suzuki's globally acclaimed expertise in compact cars. The Ritz further reiterates Maruti Suzuki's commitment to bring global car models for its customers in India.

Porsche Cayenne Diesel

The Porsche Cayenne Diesel which has been the talk of the town ever since its international debut earlier this year has just been launched in India.

The much anticipated diesel variant of Porsche's popular Cayenne SUV, after being unveiled to the world at this year's Geneva Motor Show, finally made its way over to India. This Cayenne is extremely significant for Porsche as it's the first diesel powered car made by the sports car maker in its illustrious history spanning over 75 years. Rod Wallace, Managing Director of Precision Cars India, the official Porsche importer in the country, commented during the launch, "The Cayenne Diesel is intended primarily for the European market but we saw a tremendous demand for the car from all over India". However, since the annual production of this car is limited, as with all Porsche cars, only 19 of units of the Cayenne Diesel will be coming to India in 2009, but hopefully we can expect more in the following years.

On the outside, the Cayenne Diesel has the same appearance as its petrol-powered twin, but it's an altogether different story under the hood. Powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine producing about 240PS of power, this large SUV can accelerate to 100km/h in just 8.3 seconds and tops out at 214km/h. But more interesting is the 550Nm of torque produced at a lowly 2000rpm by the diesel motor, which should make driving off-road, no matter how rare, an extremely exciting experience.

The driving experience promises to be ultra-smooth, business-as-usual with Porsche's tried-and-tested six-speed Tiptronic S transmission as standard. And burning diesel instead of petrol means that this new Cayenne can also achieve great fuel economy - 10.75 kmpl - quite astonishing for such a large and luxurious (and heavy) car. And with a 100-litre fuel tank capacity, the Cayenne Diesel can manage an exceptionally high range of about 1000km on a single tank full. A high-tech exhaust gas management and recirculation system also keeps the emissions inside the strict EU4 emissions.

Coming to the important bit, the cost - pricing for the Cayenne Diesel starts at Rs. 64,95,000 on-road Delhi, inclusive of all import duties and taxes. All the new cars will be covered by the Porsche Assistance programme for 24 months, which is aimed at providing road-side assistance to owners whenever required.

India's Micro Nanos

After attending to his work in Tosham town in Haryana’s Bhiwani district, farmer Rajbir Singh is waiting at a bus stop to return to Sagwan, Chandan Kumar, 17, (left) driving his car, Fame.More Pictureshis village 10 km away. The only way he can do this is by hopping aboard a Jugaad. Soon enough, one comes along, sputtering like an irrigation pump, which is exactly what its ‘engine’ is. The Jugaad rejoices in running on a diesel generator set. Rajbir Singh is matter-of-fact: “It’s the poor man’s mode of conveyance. Since there’s no public transport available to our villages, we are completely dependent on Jugaads.”

Dependent on seemingly undependable vehicles? They have inefficient steering and no one will insure them but they are the lifeline for a majority of Indians living beyond the reach of metalled roads. With few options available, this neglected majority made its own, alternative arrangements. They have colourful names — Jugaad, Maruta, Chhakda, Peter Rehra, for instance – and these ‘miracles’ give mobility a new name and new face. Some say they are “micro Nanos”, like IIM Ahmedabad professor Anil Gupta, who is executive vice-chairperson of the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), which documents and gives awards to the work of grassroots innovators. Gupta says, “There are thousands of them. Gujarat alone has about 30,000 varieties of vehicles, which are low-cost, innovative and with wide applications.”

These homespun sets of wheels have a huge reach — vast swathes of the country, including parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, UP and remote Rajasthani hamlets. The vehicles work to the same basic principle — cheap to run and constructed out of cannibalized parts. The Jugaad is a case in point. It needs just one 10-14 horsepower diesel generator, the shaft of an old jeep, a steering wheel, old tyres and some wooden planks for seats. It is nothing more than a motorized bullock cart and costs just Rs 35,000-40,000. Throw in a speedometer, self-starter, stereo and digital clock and prices climb to Rs 90,000. Add a few gears and brakes and the Jugaad can coast along at a dizzying 45 kmph.

The Maruta is not much different. Darshan Singh, who has spent 20 of his 80 years assembling Marutas in his backyard in Jethuwal village near Amritsar, says it’s in great demand. The Maruta transports cargo, farm produce, cattle, schoolchildren, marriage parties, pilgrims and much more besides. Marutas, which debuted soon after the Maruti 800’s launch in the 1980s, are also called Gharuka and Peter Rehra, the name of a local engine brand.

Most of these clones are colourfully-bedecked and reflect the local ethos. In Chhakda country, which stretches across Saurashtra and rural Ahmedabad, it’s common to see a flash of colour whizzing by as a moustachioed man rides the Enfield Bullet motorbike attached to a heavily-decorated vehicle. Unsurprisingly, the Chhakda would be overflowing with people. Narendra Patel, who owns a Chhakda, says about 300 Chhakdas run on the 30-km stretch between Sanand and Nal Sarovar, close to where the Nano mother plant is taking shape. “It’s the cheapest and easiest mode of transport,” he says. Hanumant Pandya of Kheecha village in Ahmedabad district uses a Chhakda for his regular commute to work and adds, “It’s fun travelling on it, with 25-30 people clinging to every inch of space available.”

But there’s more to these rough-and-ready nanos than a folksy charm. Their socio-economic significance is undeniable. Parents in remote areas of Bharatpur are only able to send their daughters to school because the Jugaads ply every day. There are thought to be roughly 6,000 Jugaads in Rajasthan. Almost nothing else will run in the hardscrabble areas the Jugaad plies. Off the road, the Jugaad’s engine is used to run the tubewell, fodder-cutting machine, sugarcane juice extracting machine and more. Gupta of the National Innovation Foundation says such remarkable innovations exist “in other parts of the world too (but) the special factors in India may be the availability of roadside mechanics, rural workshops and the fabrication skills of people from the Vishwakarma caste”. With telling emphasis, he says, “It’s fascinating to see people who have so little, have so much creativity.”

Some of this creativity has been recorded by the Foundation. It has documented the work of many farmers and artisans, who either tinkered with existing machines or created new ones for agricultural and other operations. These include Mansukhbhai Jagani’s bicycle-mounted sprayer and Bachubhai Savajibhai Thesia’s tractor without a steering wheel, both from Gujarat, as also Rajasthani Choudhary Kamruddin’s multipurpose bicycle, which allows him to drill wood and metal, sharpen tools, wind motors and saw wood. Meanwhile, Chandan Kumar, the 17-year-old son of a car mechanic in Azamgarh, UP, has used spare parts to assemble a two-seater, open-air car called Fame, costing no more than Rs 25,000. He used a scooter’s 150cc engine and added four gears, a bonnet, a horn, a hand brake and indicators. Fame, which runs 45-50 km on every litre of fuel, achieves a maximum speed of 80 kmph. But Fame looks set to go places the Jugaad and Chhakda may not, with experts at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research suggesting it could be modified for use as a golf cart priced between Rs 50,000-60,000. That’s one-tenth of the current price of golf carts.

The Fame and all the other, more humble mobile ‘miracles’ are just a few of the many examples of our instinct for ‘jugaad’ or improvisation. The Nano was born on a drawing board in a corporate world. But look beyond the boardrooms and there’s a vast bank of ideas among India’s gritty millions, whose daily survival depends on smart thinking.

Innova CNG

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recently announced the availability of the CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered Innova, the first energy efficient multipurpose vehicle in the country, which is available in all petrol grades of the Innova. The dual fuel Innova will use CNG as an alternate fuel. The Innova, India's most popular multipurpose vehicle since its launch in 2005, will now provide customers a more economical and environment friendly driving option. The Innova comes with 1998 cc, 16V DOHC VVTi petrol engine which is compatible with CNG.

The CNG Innova has a manual selectors switch that enables the driver to easily switch from gasoline to CNG and vice versa. The on-board cylinder has a capacity of approximately 12kg of CNG and the running cost on CNG for the Innova is estimated to be around Re 1.6/km or even less depending on the driving cycle. Taking into account mileage, increased engine oil life and reduced maintenance costs, the CNG Innova offers about 50 per cent saving over diesel in running costs. The CNG Innova will be priced at around Rs 85000 higher than the current petrol version.

Mahindra’s military vehicles unit

Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS), on Tuesday, inaugurated its first Special Military Vehicles (SMV) facility in Faridabad near here.

“The SMV will manufacture specialized vehicles for armed forces, paramilitary forces and the police and is also designed to undertake vehicle development, armouring and conversions,” Mahindra Group Vice Chairman & Managing Director Anand Mahindra told reports at the plant site. The SMV plant will be developed in two phases. “In first phase, we have invested Rs 25 crore and developed shopfloor of 40,000 square feet for building bullet proof, riot control, armoured vehicles and armoured tourist buses,” MDS Chief Executive Brigadier (Retd) Khutub Hai said.

“In the second phase, we will develop another 40,000 square feet and build the high-mobility vehicle ‘AXE’ high-mobility vehicles and mine-protection vehicles that we are developing in collaboration with BAE Systems from South Africa. For the second leg, we will invest Rs 15 crore,” he added.

Hai said that the plant has the capacity to roll-out 500 armoured vehicles every year and would be able to produce upto 750 similar vehicles in times of “emergence”.

Axe

Mahindra’s Axe is a muscular and capable of navigating through any terrain and it will replace the Indian Army’s Mahindra Jeeps. According to Brigadier Khutub A Hai, CEO, Mahindra defence systems the Axe was designed with help from an overseas designer. An absolutely new platform is used for developing the Axe and it is developed to suit the Indian needs. Axe has been developed totally indigenously and it soft top. Mahindra has developed a petrol version of the axe for the special forces of a foreign country while the diesel one is for the Indian Army. Mahindra will initially import the engines for the Axe later it will strap its own engine into the Axe. Axe’s petrol version uses a more than 4 litre GM Votec engine (which powers the Chevy Blazer) while the diesel uses a 2.7 litre Ssangyong diesel (which powers the Rexton). Mahindra has been testing the axe ranging from 150hp to 300hp to 400hp. The transmission system for the Axe is a Mercedes Benz one. According to Mahindra the diesel axe offers around 8-9 km per liter while the petrol axe offers 6/7 km per liter. The Axe has a payload of 120 kg with a 3500 GVW. Axe’s biggest USP is its suspension system (it’s an all-wheel independent suspension vehicle) which gives its extreme mobility. Mahindra has already bagged an order from a foreign army for 215 units of Axe which 15 are being shipped right away. Mahindra is looking to export this axe to countries like malaysia next year (diesel version) and for Africa, Gulf, UAE, Jordan.

Axe civilian version
Mahindra has a long and successful record designing Jeeps and SUVs for military and civilian use. There’s a lot of visible commonality between the Axe and a several of Mahindra’s own SUVs.Hence not alone the Indian army is gifted, we too! Yes, Mahindra is planning a civilian version of the Axe.The civilian version of axe will be ready by 2009 with an automatic transmission. Axe’s civillian version will be homologated with styling and other changes. But it will use a Mahindra driveline. The basic characteristic of performance will be the same but the looks will be different like the Humvee and Hummer. For the civilian version of axe the engine displacement will be lowered and there will be cosmetic changes on the dashboard. But the Mahindra wants to keep the suspension and platform will be unchanged. Axe civilian verison will be only diesel and with automatic transmission. Mahindra will showcase the axe at the 2008 delhi Auto Expo. Mahindra’s commercial Axe is expected to be priced roughly between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 22 lakh.

Nano effect? Ford to roll out small car in ‘10

Ford India said troubles with its parent in US will not effect its planned $500 million investments for India, and added that the company’s small car would hit the market by early 2010 with localisation as high as 85% to keep the price competitive.

Michael Boneham, MD and president of Ford India, told that the company’s expansion plans were going ahead “as scheduled”. The US auto major — that posted a record $14.7 billion net loss in 2008 globally – had announced the half-a billion dollar investment for India last year to double annual production capacity to 2 lakh units and make 2.5 lakh petrol and diesel engines.

“The last six months have been tough for the auto industry.. and we maintain a cautious outlook for the rest of 2009,” Boneham said, adding that he expected a turn-around only by 2010. “And this will be the time when we bring in our small car. Thus, we are confident it will get a good response,” he added.

The company is making efforts to ensure that its new small car, that is being designed and engineered for the Indian market, is attractively priced considering it faces tough competition from players like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata. “It will be the first offering from Ford in the mass market segment and we are making efforts to keep it cost-competitive while making it a great value proposition,” he said.

Ford currently sells sedans like Ikon and Fiesta in India apart from the SUV Endeavour and has seen sales shrinking 19% in April-February 2009 period at 24,849 units (year-on-year). Boneham said he expected numbers to turn positive once the small car hits the market. Ford’s car would come with petrol and diesel engines, both falling within the small car definition of the government to avail lower excise benefits—petrol engine under 1200cc and diesel under 1500cc with overall length below four meters. Asked whether the company had plans to export the model, Boneham said it would certainly be sold abroad, though the initial focus would be on the domestic market. “Yes, we would look at markets beyond India and these would be countries in the Asian region, South Africa as well as Asia-Pacific area,” Boneham said.

And in the run-up to the car’s launch, the American company is beefing up sales and service network in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities while also working on relationships with banks for broadening retail finance options.

Now track bus routes, drivers, speed remotely

Imagine waiting at a bus stop and receiving a mobile alert on how much longer you bus will take to arrive. Or swiping a card in your office cab that helps authorities monitor transit security; the card also doubles up as office attendance.

All this possible because of modern tracking technologies and automobile manufacturers appear keen on integrating such systems in their vehicles.

   Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland, for instance, have partnered with different organizations to implements tracking technology, albeit on a small scale currently. Adoption can only increase with employee and student safety now a greater priority than ever.

   Tata Motors along with other Tata group companies have come out with system called ‘Trako’ that provides Global Positioning System (GPS)-based real time vehicle tracking.

   GPS, a global navigation satellite system, has about 24 satellites orbiting earth that transmits radio signals to a receiver. This helps in calculating a vehicle’s location, speed as well as direction. GPS receivers can communicate position data either to a computer or a mobile device.

   Vehicle tracking software and systems have been in existence abroad for quite a few years now and have been used by transport and logistics firms for following up on routes in real-time.

   Now, Tata Motors ahs introduced three Trako modules that help monitor public busses, school busses, and employee transfer cabs.

   The in-transit employee safety module allows employees to swipe radio frequence (RF) cards while boarding and alighting the company transfer vehicle. It monitors employee pick up and drop against a trip plan on the map in real time – such monitoring can ensure that no female employee travels alone in a vehicle.

   The school bus monitoring and safety solution automatically sends alerts to parents either through the Internet or via SMS. Besides the position of a bus, parents can also know the bus speed – crucial to monitor instances of over speeding. The system is currently being used by Shiva Republic school, Ryan International and Delhi Public school in Bengaluru.

   For inter-city and intra-city travel, Trako offers bus tracking via web portals, mobile phones and on electronic displays as well.

   “Safety and security comes first to us. This is what we’ve kept in mind while bringing out this product,” head of sales and marketing, bus and SCV passengers, Tata Motors, Sandeep Kumar said.

   Three years ago, Ashok Leyland had introduced a similar ‘Alert’ system in India. In collaboration with Siemens, the firm had designed a GPS-based telematics system for vehicle location information, status as well as for monitoring driving patterns.

   “Alert is a big hit in Chennai and has been operating for one and a half years,” president of Telematics at Ahsok Leyland Jayaram Krishnan said. The system has been installed in 600 buses in Chennai.

   Trako, thus far, has seen traction mostly in Delhi where it has been installed in 140 busses. “Alert is our biggest competition. We are in talks with the KSRTC in Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh Roadways,” Sanjeev Telang, programme manager of Telematics with Tata Motors, said.

New Ford Ikon Launched

Ford has launched a new version of its successful small sedan, the Ford Ikon, with new diesel along with petrol engine and different looks in India.

The new diesel version of the Ikon would feature Ford’s famous 1400 cc diesel Duratorq engine which already does duty in the Ford Fiesta and Fusion. There is new 1.3 liter ROCAM petrol engine too - but we guess the big news is the launch of a diesel.

Apart from the engne, what has changed, and for the better, are the looks. The old Ford Ikon we had was seriously geeting long in the tooth, looking like something from the 1980s, what with all the new dramatic designs coming to Indian roads. The new design puts the new Ford corporate grille on the front, making it look much more modern and contemporary.

Side on, the new Ford Ikon does not look very different from the old version. Butget that optional rear spoiler, and skirts, and the car can look quite different and modern. Rear tail lamps are a bit different, and the front lights are totally new and go well with the new front grille.

What does it not have? Airbags, ABS, EBD, etc etc. Now we are against every car that does not offer airbags, and the Ikon does not seem to offer it even as an option. That said, there are many small cars in India without airbags, and we suspect the lack of an airbag is not going to stop those who fall in love with the new looks and fuel economy of the new diesel Ford Ikon.

Price

The 1.3 liter petrol version of the new Ford Ikon is priced at Rs 4.59 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi, while the diesel is priced at Rs 5.19 lakhs. At this price, the new diesel Ikon can provide good competition to the Suzuki Dzire, as well as the Tata Indigo - after all, the Ikon has been around a long time, and a diesel version may be just what Ford needs to lift up its fortunes in India.

1.4 Duratorq diesel engine

The new diesel Fusion Dura Torq engine is an inline 4 cylinder common rail diesel engine that produces 68 bhp at 4000 RPM. The 68 bhp may not seem really much, but remmeber that the Ikon was always a light car. Add to that, great torque from the diesel engine, and fuel economy, and you may have a winner here in the new Ford Ikon. Maximum torque from the Dura Torq diesel is 160 Nm at 2000 rpm. The new Ford Ikon gets a 5-speed manual transmission.

Suspension

There are independent McPherson struts with separate sub-frame at the front of the car, while the rear has heavy duty twist-beam with strut-type coil spring / damper units. The steering is power-assisted rack and pinion. Ford claims that the suspension of the new Ikon is a new system developed for the European Ford Fiesta and Ford Ka.

Brakes

The new Ford Ikon has ventillated disc brakes at the front, and drums at the rear. Reasonable enough for a small sedan. Tyres are radials, 175/70 R13 front and rear.

Comforts

Front and rear power windows, cup-holders, air conditioning and heater are provided.

Colours

Brush steel, Morello, Diamond White, Panther Black, Paprika Red, Platinum and Moondust Silver are the colours on offer for the new Ford Ikon.

Hyundai's i20 ready to hit road

Korean major Hyundai was one of the most upbeat of car makers displaying its wares at Paris and against all expectations genuinely merited this fact of life among visions of downtrends and gloomy sales revolving all around North America and Europe.

The third of Hyundai's i - themed cars (after the i40 and the i10), this is surely the supermini to top them all at least in the Indian context. Packing in an overwhelming modicum of European style with clean chiselled lines and swoopily curved creases that add much needed visual character, it would be galling to just suggest that the i20 is only about style and turnout.

The fact that its maker is dovetailing all its efforts in the small car class with European build, specs and dynamics to go with the looks and the packaging is manifest in this tiny package which effectively replaces the Getz supermini in Europe. This however wouldn't be the case in India, where the duo would reside – happily it seems for HMIL – at both ends of the B-segment.

The look of the i20, seemingly much prettier than the Getz and surely much cuddly than Suzuki's much acclaimed Swift. However the i20 is a larger car and this has to do with it being built from the ground up using a completely new platform that was created specifically to allow Hyundai to move into Europe's cut-throat supermini segment.

Built on a 2525mm wheelbase helps endow the i20 with a generous passenger cabin, surely the strength of the car along with its style and packaging of course.

As seen with the i10 already in this country, the turnout and the cabin treatment are very good for this class of car and for sure in Europe the trim and equipment levels are certainly class matching. This of course translates to great value considering the price it would be pegged at against its European rivals.

The handiwork of Hyundai's European technical centre at Russelsheim (where Opel is based), the car has been tailored to deliver a Eurospec dynamic ability and tuned for handling and ride quality which appeals to European drivers.

The highly rigid new structure is key to this with MacPherson strut suspension up front and a torsion beam rear end along with rack and pinion power assisted steering to deliver precise handling with a firmly damped ride.

The styling of the i20 is clearly heavily influenced by the existing i-series models. Looking at the little chrome grille, teardrop headlights and elliptical glassarea anyone can tell that its an i-series car. Thanks to the use of strong crease over the plain surface i20 is more masculine unlike the feminine i10 . Inside Hyundai is promising clever packaging and generous equipment levels.

i20 has a roomier interior and longer wheelbase than the Getz. i20 which is based on a all new platform will be offered with three engine options - 1.2 , 1.4-litre petrol engines and an eco friendly 1.4L common rail engine. The indian i20 will get the recently introduced 1.2L kappa engine to qualify for the small car excise norm. Hyundai may tune up the 1.2L kappa engine for the superior performance of the i20.

To have such a strong engine offering is further proof of how intense the small car battle has enmeshed manufacturers into making those tiny but critical incremental offerings count as they bid to woo customers in a world steadily shunning large cars.

Yamaha FZ 16 Preview

With its launch Yamaha as a company will in no time get synonymous with the youth of the country and will mark the beginning of a new era. The premium bike maker is all set to roll the dice in its favor posing tough competition to Apache, Pulsars and Hunks.

Yamaha FZ-16 mobike is set to take the generation next by storm with several unique features, while the basic design is adopted from earlier series of FZ. Much awaited Yamaha's YZF - R15, a 150 cc sports bike is finally out on Indian roads on 12th of this month. The bike announced by Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. contains true Yamaha Racing DNA. The bike, Super Sports Yamaha R15 is expected to set all new standards in design and performance in bike Industry of India.

This new bike YZF - R15 has many firsts to its credit on Indian road including first liquid cooled engine, 4 valve fuel injected engine etc. The YZF R15 is powered by 149.8cc Fuel Injected liquid cooled engine producing 17bhp with maximum torque of 15 Nm at 7500rpm; which makes it like the most powerful bike under 200cc range. Looks and Design
Yamaha, by introducing a bike derived from R1(globally acclaimed Yamaha bike) is like giving Indians what they want. Indian bike market is still in initial stage. So giving R15 is like giving taste of international standards and styling to Indians but on the cost which is in their reach. When I say that design is inspired from R1 then there is really nothing much left to say as we know about the success and design of R1 very well, however, in layman's language, bike has stunning looks. Company says that they have a "R" characteristic in their design which is adopted in R15 too.

The R series is the embodiment of

Yamaha R15 Headlamp

The R15 has more practical design as per Indian perspective. They made sure that bike looks international as well usable in India perspective too. The bike has some good details, however they adopted it to be more curvy than having sharp design of R1. Side cowl ar impressively designed to cover small engine (150 cc) of R15 and nicely placed. However, engine would have looked even better if it was body colored or black.
The bike sports digital console and speedometer. Tyres are tubeless.

Riding position is all sporty. One would feel sporty the moment you take seat on bike. As hot now a days, the bike sports split rear grab rail. Looks cool. However, real side indicators could have been more sporty. They just look so basic and give little feel of out of theme. May be because of little simple back of R15 as compared to its front. But overall, it makes decent impression.

Engine

The Yamaha YZF R15 is powered by 149.8cc Fuel Injected liquid cooled engine producing 17bhp with maximum torque of 15 Nm at 7500rpm. So consider it as return of evil that we had once saw many years back in Yamaha's bike and for which Yamaha was famous in India. I still see that people rework on old Yamaha bike and use them even they are out of production because they remember and like that power image of Yamaha.
R15's engine is liquid cool, its first in India in bikes. The technology is widely used in four wheelers etc but its hardly their in bikes of this niche. Being a liquid cool engine, it ensure better engine performance even on power ride and on long ride. So bike has a small radiator in it. Moreover, being liquid cooled, it also helps in reducing engine noise so deliver even smoother ride.

Engine of Yamaha YZF R15Also, Yamaha has implemented new DiASil Technology which makes engine more efficient in power handling. DiASil Cylinders are all-aluminum cylinders made by YAMAHA’s proprietary aluminum die casting technology. An aluminum alloy with 20% silicon content is used to create a very hard, reliable cylinder surface, making conventional iron sleeves obsolete. As a result, the entire cylinder can be made of aluminum, a better conductor of heat, which means the cylinder delivers better heat dissipation and less weight. (Aluminum’s heat conductivity is 3.1 times that of iron.)And the piston used in R15 are made in a forging process, its a Yamaha's own proprietary "Controlled Forging" which makes piston lighter and thinner yet more usable. Engine uses Fuel injecting technology with 3 ltr air duct and providing improved combustion ability hence efficiency. Overall, engine is power packed and highly optimized. Surely gonna make you rock.

Chassis and Suspension

YZF-R15 is equipped with a linked type monocross suspension that delivers a comfortable ride and a cushioning performance that is less prone to bottoming out. In particular, it reduces annoying “sinking” when riding tandem. And the Chassis is derived from their experience of MotoGP and they call it Delta box frame. Company describes it as :" This type of frame is currently used in YAMAHA’s R series of sport models. The engine is mounted on rigid supports; one on the head side and two on the case side; so that the engine itself becomes a structural member contributing to body strength and rigidity. The engine’s low vibration makes rigid supports possible, ensuring low vibrations and excellent balance of rigidity."

Mileage

As a performance bike, do not expect a decent mileage, being a 150 cc bike , only expect 35kmpl to 45kmpl of mileage.

Fiat Linea

To match the success of Fiat Punto, Fiat has introduced Linea, Punto’s saloon version. The automobile is so alluring that one can’t stop admiring it. The large two-part grille, the high-mounted, streaked-back wraparound headlamps with the twin circular elements inside the headlamps bowls and the machine-gun port fog lamps give it a real Maserati vibe. Linea, wwose interior is very spacious and is as comfortable as a Toyota Corolla, will be priced at approximately Rs 7-8 lakh.

Linea’s stiff modern chassis, tall springs and soft shocks make driving a pleasure. Good performance and economy will be provided by the diesel motor—the same 1.3 litre second-generation common-rail motor that currently powers the Swift DDiS will be under Linea’s hood. Fiat offers two petrol motors as well a 77bhp 1.4-litre and a 120bhp turbocharged version of the same motor.

The cabin space of Linea is generous and the design of the dash delivers an up-market big-car feel even thaough it is quite traditional and the seats are big and comfortable with support in all the right places. Comfortable and attractive, the Linea will be on the forefront of Fiat’s assault on India, along with the Grande Punto. Make no mistake; this is one very capable car. Fiat’s wilderness years, as is the case overseas, seem to be coming to an end.

Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI

The Tiguan is based on VW’s Golf platform, and is an amalgamation of ‘tiger’ and ‘iguana’. This import, which will be priced close to the Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Captiva, looks fantastic. The double-grille goes perfectly with those sharp-cut head lamps and bonnet. The flanks are full of confident strokes and lines and it has the quintessential SUV’s square looks as well.

A few unique design elements like the squared-off wheel arches (incidentally, they help its aerodynamics) will only serve to increase its appeal to the eagle-eyed. Some suspension components come from the Golf, with a few bits like the rear suspension borrowed from the Passat(http://vrooom-vrooom.blogspot.com/2007/09/volkswagen-launches-passat-at-rs-2235.html). The Golf suspension components make it one of the best-handling SUVs around. With the Haldex four wheel-drive system, it is never short of grip. Engine options at launch will be a 150bhp supercharged and turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol and a 138bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel; the latter being the more impressive, and more likely to make it here first.

In standard trim, the Tiguan is clearly biased towards on-road driving, but should you want one to go mud-plugging, you could possibly specify the ‘Escape’ spec, which adds a higher front bumper, sump guard, hill descent control and a compass to help you on your forays off the black-top. The interior has ample space and again, shares bits with Golf variants. There isn’t a DSG option yet; just a six-speed manual. Expect this car to go right to the top.

Fiat Grande Punto

Fiat India desperately needs a new product to try and erase its current image of a company that is
about to close shop. Yes, the tie-up with Tata Motors has given its image a bit of a boost in the
minds of the car-buying public. But to be able to make a complete turnaround, Fiat needs a new
product.

That new product could well be the Fiat Grande Punto. Fiat Grande Punto is a premium B-segment
category car that is highly successful in Europe. Fiat is said to have already done clinics for the
Grande Punto and has also been testing the product on Indian roads. The car, which is a hit in the
European market, may also be changed for India, so that it meets the requirements for the lower
excise duty benefit.

Designed by the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, the Grande Punto is an attractive, fluidly
designed car that has also been given the Euro NCAP five-star rating for passenger safety. It sure
will be a great car to own and, hopefully, Fiat can speed up the process of launching it here.

The car may also be launched in time and be offered the 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engine that would be
manufactured by the Suzuki-GM-Fiat alliance engine plant. Fiat may also shorten the present length
of Grande Punto, which is 4030mm, by 30mm so that it can comply with the new small car
regulations and take advantage of an 8 percent excise saving.

Meanwhile, Fiat is likely to launch the new Palio that will incorporate a few exterior changes and
could well also be offered with a new engine.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The other car in the vicinity happens to be the radical Outlander SUV. Sure, Mitsubishi has launched a new Montero recently but the Outlander is in a different league altogether. One look and you will be bowled away by the futuristic design. A high bonnet line gives the SUV proper proportion, while beautifully crafted headlamps lend stunning appeal. The bumper with raked lower panel gives the Outlander go-anywhere capability. Muscular wheel arches with large clearance allow mud plugging and add to the racy theme. Viewed from side profile the lines run parallel. The rear quarter glass panel looks splendid. The rear continues to be radical. The roof spoiler blends into the rear windscreen flanked by the tail lamps. The high stance spells fewer or no scraps.

Jazzy 'n' comfy

The Jazz is the hatchback version of the City—both cars are built on Honda’s Global Small Car platform. Since we are acquainted with the City, we already have an idea of its space, comfort and build quality, especially of the interiors. Though City’s cab-forward design was not to the liking of many in the country, the absence of the boot would solve that worr. The Jazz will be positioned alongside the likes of the Skoda Fabia at premium end of the hatchback range.

Think of it as one of the most spacious hatchbacks, despite the 3.8metre length which classifies it as a small car. Its interiors will be much bigger than the Chevrolet UV-A or the Hyundai Getz. In fact, the Jazz will essentially be the all-new City sans a boot. However, in order to meet small-car norms, it could hit the road with a1.2-litre engine—the existing 1,246cc i-DSI motor doesn’t meet the norms, but industry sources say that Honda is working on reducing the cubic capacity or is even considering another power plant, to be able to duck below the crucial 1,200cc limit.

That will make it considerably cheaper than the City. But with Honda deciding to bank on its traditional strengths, driving enthusiasts could well get a V-Tec version of this automobile. The Jazz and Fits (that’s what it is called in Japan) are international hits and have sold more than two million worldwide. Jazz has also earned many awards, including the Japan Car of the Year award.

With a number of revolutionary car launches at the Delhi Auto Expo 2008, now it is the season of cars, especially small and cheapest ones. Competing with all the automobile giants in India, Maruti, the successful Indian company has come out with their latest launch, a small but efficient car named 'Splash'. Maruti Suzuki is all set to make a Splash in the Indian market with the car. The Splash is Suzuki's fourth strategic world model and is based on the hot selling Swift. Targeting the Indian families, Splash will roll out to Indian roads in 2008.

The Splash is a taller hatchback with enough and more extra space. The height makes it a tall boy but its the best tall boy hatch to have hit the Indian market yet. The rear looks rather sporty with a inward angling windscreen and side pillar tail lamps. The flared wheel arches lend the Splash a masculine appeal. The Splash would be launched in India in the summer of 2008. The pricing would be a little higher than the Swift in the range of Rs. 4.5-5.5 lakh.

The styling is bold and is characterised by the massive headlamps at the front. The rear is a result of some out-of-the-box thinking and has an inward tilt to it. On the inside, you will notice the parts-sharing that Maruti has mastered now. The dash and the center console are perfect and mind blowing. The Splash is the fourth new model for the Maruti Suzuki after the launch of Swift, Grand Vitara and SX4. Volkswagen to launch new Polo in India

The VW Polo will compete with Swift, Getz and the new Indica.

Come 2009, and Volkswagen would lift the wraps off a new variant of its popular car, Polo. To be a competitor to Maruti’s Swift, Hyundai’s Getz and Tata Motor’s Indica, the new Polo variant will be designed and developed by Volkswagen internally for the Indian market.

The carmaker, meanwhile, inked a pact with the Maharastra government for producing Volkswagen cars from Pune. According to a Volkswagen official, the company would go for the B segment of the passenger car market, which incidentally is the largest in the country. The company sees further growth in this segment.

Post-pact with the Maharashtra government, the auto major would acquire 230 hectares of land in Chakan at Pune. The new plant would boast of an initial capacity of 110,000 units by 2009. The company is expected to invest around Rs 2,450 crore for the plant.

Further, according to reports, the car maker will also roll out its Passat model , which will don a price tag of Rs 30 lakh . The Passat would be rolled out of the Skoda Auto manufacturing facility at Aurangabad by mid-2007. Skoda officials, in the meanwhile, added that it would double production at Aurangabad from 12,000 units to 25,000 by next fiscal. The facility would manufacture Volkswagen cars and look for few models from the Audi stable.

Skoda Fabia

Finally Skoda is launching Fabia in this month at The Auto Expo 2008, Delhi.

The Škoda Fabia is a supermini produced by Czech manufacturer Škoda Auto since 2000. It is the first model to use the Volkswagen Group’s A04 platform, which it shares with the Volkswagen Polo Mk IV and SEAT Ibiza. It was the successor to the Škoda Felicia, which was discontinued in 2001. The Fabia is available in hatchback, estate and saloon body styles.

The second generation Fabia was officially presented at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2007. It is slightly larger than its predecessor and takes styling cues from the new Roomster leisure activity vehicle.

Engines

The petrol engine linup is a mixture of newer engines from the Volkswagen Group and some carry overs from the outgoing model. The base 1.2 remains the same while the higher powered version will have its power output upped to 70 bhp. There is only a single 1.4 litre petrol on this model, producing 85 bhp. The range topping petrol engine will be the 1.6 16v engine producing 105 bhp. There will be an option to link this engine to a 6 speed tiptronic transmission.

Diesel engines consist of the same 70 bhp and 80 bhp 1.4 TDI units from before. The range topping diesel will be a 1.9 TDI producing 105 bhp.

Features

The second generation Fabia will feature side air bags, which may be fitted as standard in some markets with stringent safety regulations. Also available as an option will be head airbags.

The estate and saloon variants will arrive later in this year and so will run alongside the outgoing estate and saloon.

Bajaj Auto Ltd, the country’s second largest two-wheeler manufacturer, on Monday said it has picked up 14.5% stake in European sports bike maker KTM Power Sports AG for more than Rs 300 crore.

The deal is in line with Bajaj’s global expansion strategy and will see the two companies jointly develop engines and share each other’s dealer network. Besides, it will also entail manufacturing the KTM’s products at BAL’s Chakan facility in Maharashtra.

“Bajaj Auto has becomes the second largest shareholder in the company after its promoters. This is our first step toward going global,” BAL general manager (marketing) Amit Nandi said.

He said the consideration for the deal was valued at “over Rs 300 crore”. Describing the deal as a win-win situation for both the partners, Nandi said it would give BAL access to around 720 KTM dealers in Europe through which the Indian firm can retail its products. “Right now details are being worked out as to what kind of products are to be sold there,” he said, adding the two partners would also be jointly developing 125cc and 250cc four stroke water cooled engines for future products.

“These engines will get into both KTM and BAL products and we will even manufacture KTM products at our Chakan facility,” Nandi said, but said no products have been identified as yet.

To start with, KTM’s existing product would be retaled through BAL’s ‘Probiking’ outlets in India, he said.

“The formal launch will happen later in the fiscal or early part of the next fiscal but we will be definitely showcasing KTM products at the upcoming auto expo,” Nandi added.

The tie up with BAL will enable KTM to extend its product portfolio for the future with a 125cc street product line. This will be in addition to the present 1,190cc, 990cc and 690cc platforms developed and manufactured in Austria. With the introduction of the new EU driving license norms, which allow riding of 125cc motorcycles with a car driving license in all EU member states, KTM will be able to offer premium entry models in the street segment.

Hyundai Motor unveils new compact car - i10

Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Wednesday introduced its new compact car, 'i10' priced between Rs 3.39 lakh and Rs 3.98 lakh.

This is the first car from Hyundai which makes its world debut in India.

"The i10 will be manufactured only in our Indian plant and exported to over 70 countries," Hyundai Motor Company President Jae Kook Choi said in New Delhi.

The new i10 is powered by a 1.1 litre petrol engine with five speed manual transmission.

Choi said Hyundai Motor India is poised to play a very important role not only in India but also in HMC's global plans.

"We hope that with India becoming the hub for small cars we would see a significant increase in the company's presence in many more countries," Choi said.

Bajaj-Renault-Nissan plan Rs 1-lakh car by end 2011

Carlos Ghosn, CEO of French and Japanese automakers Renault and Nissan, announced an exclusive collaboration of his companies with Bajaj Auto (BAL) to make and sell an ultra low cost (ULC) car priced at around $2,500 (approximately Rs 98, 587).

That’s a tough call considering that the latest Bajaj Auto three-wheeler passenger vehicle (RE DD-Fi) is itself priced at $2,500. But not an impossible one, feel BAL MD Rajiv Bajaj and Ghosn. “If Tatas can do it, there is no reason Bajaj cannot with the help of Renault and Nissan, said Ghosn. He expects BAL to exend its low-cost, high-quality engineering skills in two-wheelers to the proposed ULC car too.

“There’s so much of the Japanese productivity systems being followed here. Look at the poka-yokes (a system of foolproofing against errors) everywhere in the plant. I expect it will be extended to the ULC car, he said.

Ghosn said Bajaj will lead the tripartite tie-up, while the two global auto makers support the venture in design and engineering. He also said they will do anything required for that, even if it meant equity participation in the project. “Since we have never made four-wheelers, we will need support in the vehicle part and will set up a research and engineering team for body and chassis engineering at our Akurdi facility, said Bajaj.

For engine and transmission of the ULC car, Bajaj is, however, confident that the company’s existing team, led by Joseph Abraham, will be most appropreiate. Since Bajaj’s Paris visit last month, seven working groups are thrashing out different aspects of the car project—its feasibility, profitability and ability t meet aspirations of the three partners.

The idea is to make a car of quality that meets the basic needs of customers in India initially and then see if it can be exported to other markets, said Ghosn. If the answer t that is a ‘yes’—which the two companies will know in a few months when the feasibility study is completed—the ULC car is expected to be launched by end 2011. whether it will have an independent badging or joint badging is yet to be decided. Also the exact scope of the joint venture is being hammered out. While he says he knows exactly what the attributes of the proposed ULC car will be, Ghosn said he prefers to hold the details close to his chest for a while yet. At least until the capability of India’s second largest two-wheeler maker to upgrade from making two and three-wheelers to cars is demonstrated successfully.

Suzuki is planning to replace the long lasting master kid "Maruti 800" with the Japanese Suzuki Cervo which is the latest small car recently launched in Japan, the Cervo is a compact five door mini, that looks to put the other kids on the block into the shade. This sleek cute car offers 54bhp 660cc engine that boasts to offer peppy performance with great fuel economy.

Suzuki believes that they can price the car in the same amount given by Tata, they can do this by deleting some of the stuff available in the car, or by using a cheaper material to make it cost less, but, we doubt that Suzuki will use such cheap material so long as price is considered. There is going to be a lot of competition between these two in the below 800cc category. The name Cervo has been a history for jap Suzuki cars mainly used in the Japanese version of alto.

Exteriors

From the outside the Cervo looks like the Honda Fit, but this one looks like its smaller bro. As there is no sight of Tatas 1 lakh car, comparism between these two are not possible , rumors have been spread that Tatas car would be based on the Indiva Concept. Coming back to the Cervo the lines and cuts of the car are neat and classy and the clean blacky covering at the end of the windows are cleverly made so as not to see too many holes.

The headlights seem too agressive and getting ready to vrroomm and seems confident, well we can hope it really does. The Small mini SUV looks at the back, with an arching roofline, wedgy stance, slanted headlights and stubby bonnet makes out a new shape of itself and bound to be a great car if its priced is good and if its at 1L, it will be crazy selling.

Interiors

The interiors of this car somewhat looks like that of the much popular Swift. The rectangular air vents in the center and the circle open closed ones on the sides dont look even and looks a bit uneven. the colors of the controls do look lights up the dash. The boot is very small, but for daily shopping and office stuffs its just OK.

Seats at the back can seat only two and the third one can cramp up the place. A lot of storage areas are available to keep stuff in the front and find little at the back. Power Windows are airbags are available in the international markets but we doubt that it will come to India at that cost atleast airbags as an option would be better to make the car safe. In the outside markets this car is equipped with front semi-bucket seats, 4-speed auto gearbox a K6A DOHC engine with VVT, bluetooth capability.

Verdict

Cars like these will be a success in India if they are priced well with high profile, the sporty and agressive exteriors and the classy and swifty interiors are bound to make the young gens and the ladies to force their cash out, the Suzuki's bet of combining performance with FE, this car will be a hit in Indian roads.

Toyota's new hatchback for 2008 - The Yaris

Toyota is planning to launch its hatch Yaris to India next year. This vehicle is doing good in Japan & Europe.

In 2000, the Yaris was voted Car of the Year both in Europe and Japan. In 2006, over 250,000 Yaris models were sold in Europe, gaining a 6 per cent share of the B segment (or supermini) — double that ofits first year of sales.

Toyota might changes its specification according to Indian regualtions. It will launch 5 door hatch here. For western market, the Yaris will be powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, which chugs out whopping
106-hp. Also there is sedan version of Yaris in western market.

There are two petrol versions & one diesel. Petrol engines are, 1.0-liter VVT-i 69hp & 1.3-liter VVT-i 87bhp. Diesel 1.4-leter D-4D 90hp. But there maybe some changes for Indian market.

Yaris teams with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Hatchbacks are available with a split folding rear seat that reclines and slides fore and aft. Other options include remote entry and power windows, locks, mirrors.

The price will be around Rs 4.75 lacs to Rs 5.5 lacs.

Signaling a rapid advancement in its fuel cell vehicle technology, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced that it will begin production in Japan of its next generation FCX hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in three to four years. The FCX Concept vehicle, unveiled just four months ago and now on display at the North American International Auto Show, boasts a fuel cell system that delivers more power in less space, in a unique, low-floor fuel cell platform. The premium fuel cell sedan offers the ultimate in clean-running performance, and represents Honda's vision of future mobility in which vehicles are less dependent on fossil fuels and produce no significant emissions. Honda's FCX Concept defines a new stage in the evolution of fuel cell vehicle technology. The FCX Concept is designed with a low center of gravity and a full-sized cabin, offering the kind of driving pleasure and roomy interior previously unimaginable in a fuel cell vehicle. The FCX Concept is designed with a short front end to make the most of its unique low-floor platform, creating a comfortably large cabin. A tapered cabin profile and accentuated fender flare create an attractively dynamic look. The FCX Concept is an FCX that delivers style and excitement.

Using an innovative approach, the new, high-efficiency, compact V Flow fuel cell platform makes possible the lowest-floor platform in an FCV ever. Oxygen and hydrogen flow from the top to the bottom of the fuel cell stack (vertical gas flow) and the fuel cells are arranged vertically in the center tunnel (vertebral layout) for new, high-efficiency fuel cell packaging (volume efficiency).

Compact enough to fit neatly into the center tunnel but robust enough to put out 100kW of power, Honda's V Flow fuel cell stack offers space efficiency and high-energy output. The key to fuel cell performance is water management; Honda's new system takes full advantage of gravity to efficiently discharge water formed during electricity generation. This improves performance in sub-zero temperatures, further solving the problem of cold-weather startup that has been a key obstacle to the commercialization of FCV's. Now, with the V Flow fuel cell stack Honda has achieved ultra-low-temperature start-up performance on par with that of a gasoline engine. The FCX Concept drive train features three energy-efficient motors- one 80kW in the front and a 25kW space-efficient motor in each rear wheel, leaving ample room for a spacious cabin.

One barrier to FCV commercialization has been the need for high-capacity yet lightweight and compact hydrogen storage. Honda has now developed a new approach to expanding storage capacity, a newly developed hydrogen absorption material in the tank doubles capacity to 5 kg of hydrogen at 5000 PSI, extending cruising range to 350 miles, equivalent to that of a gasoline-engine car.

Approaching the vehicle, the driver is recognized by vehicle sensors and intelligent cameras unlocking the doors. The driving unit also automatically sets the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, and instrument panel to the optimal position for the driver. The instrument panel tilts up and down 45 degrees in response to vehicle speed to give either a sense of security or a relaxed feel. A system installed in the instrument panel senses the driver's line of sight shifting toward menu icons, and operates switches accordingly, allowing the driver hands-free operation of audio, AC and other systems.

As part of its effort to ensure the viability of a hydrogen-based society, Honda is developing the Home Energy Station, a comprehensive system designed to meet residential energy needs by supplying electricity and heat in addition to hydrogen fuel for vehicles. Generating hydrogen from natural gas supplied for residential use, the Home Energy Station system also offers consumers the convenience of refueling hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles at home. The system is equipped with fuel cells that generate and supply electricity to the home, and is configured to recover the heat produced during power generation for domestic water heating. In addition to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by some 40 percent, the Home Energy Station system is expected to lower the total running cost of household electricity, gas and vehicle fuel by 50 percent.

New variant from Reva

The electric car was a bold move by Reva Electric Car Company to combat ever increasing urban pollution in India. However this little runabout saw little success owing to poor range, high cost and being a two-seater.

But the company has now launched a new variant called ‘Reva-I’ that is claimed to address most issues.

It can sprint to 40kmph in as little as 7 seconds and cruise at top speed of 80kmph as compared to the earlier 65kmph. The electric motor according to the company has been tuned to generate 40 per cent more torque as well. A ‘boos’ mode ensures that short sprints are a possibility, a must-have in stop-and-go city traffic. The battery management system too has been improved to optimize efficiency. Any failure in power supply too can be detected via failure detection software.

Battery technology is constantly evolving. Just to make sure that the Reva doesn’t fall short, the company has provided provisions for upgrade to newer and technologically superior batteries.

Goodies include climate control seats. Discs brakes ensure stop-on braking and anti-roll bars enhance safety. A hill restraint feature makes life on the slops easier!

The fibre glass body is scratch proof and customizable for paint work. However, the downsides are that it is a two-seater and retails for Rs 3.49 lakh. RECC has entered Euro markets like Spain and Norway.

Mitsubishi Cedia goes duel fuel way…

Car makers can’t ignore alternative propulsion. Mitsubishi’s duel fuel Cedia Select offers option between LPG and petrol.

The company claims that there isn’t any drop in performance from the 2-litre engine after shifting into LPG mode. This is possible because the Cedia Select incorporates ‘Sequent’ technology. This technology from BRC Italy uses a 32-bit microprocessor that synchronises real time with engine ECU. Controls are precise and automatic, delivering performance, be it on petrol or LPG. The driver revels in performance while the microprocessor and ECU ensure fuel efficiency.

A 50-litre petrol and 48-63-litre LPG tank have been fitted in the Cedia Select. They endow the car with 1000km range. This variant comes with premium features like airbags, ABS with EBD, MP3 CD player, wood and titanium finish, alloy wheels etc.

The Cedia Select is priced at Rs 8.60 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi.

Aveo upgraded, CNG version on cards

The Indian auto industry has adopted the international means of upgrading cars every year. The latest is GM, with its Aveo sedan. The upgrade features a chrome lined instrument panel. The chrome finish extends to the air con vents. At the rear an armrest with integrated cup holders have been added.

GM claims that it has reworked the gearbox, which is now much better than the one on the outgoing model. NVH levels have also been worked on to make the interiors quieter.

The Aveo will soon be available with a CNG kit, it is learnt. In all probability, GM will have the 1.4 retrofitted with the kit owing to its fuel efficiency ratings.

Hero Honda rolls out Hunk

Hero Honda Motors Ltd. (HHML) on Wednesday rolled out its fourth offering in the 150 cc motorcycle segment — Hunk — with a starting price of Rs. 55,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).

The earlier offerings in the premium segment are: 156 cc CBZ Xtreme, 150 cc Achiever and 225 cc Karizma. At present, the company has a 15-20 per cent share in the premium bike segment.

Two versions of Hunk, kick-start and self-start, are being offered. While the former carries a price tag of Rs. 55,000, the later will be available for
Rs. 57,000.

HHML Managing Director Pawan Munjal said that with the launch of Hunk the company completed the product portfolio in the premium segment. Also the company had pitched for the highest number from the Hunk.

“We have doubled our share and volumes in the premium segment over the years and Hunk would further help in consolidating our stake,” HHML Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Anil Dua said.

Responding to a query on the possibility of three models in the 150 cc category leading to cannibalisation in the segment, Mr. Munjal said: “In the whole range, there is bound to be some overlapping but it provides the customer with more choices at the same time.” He said that there was an expectation that the market would revive during the festive season. Due to high interest rates, customers had postponed their purchase decision.

New Toyota Corolla Axio

Hello Axio, ‘bye Corolla!

WORD has it that Toyota is all set to launch the Corolla Axio in India as replacement for the ageing Corolla. There are two engine variants, a lower end 1.5-litre VVT-I putting out 110PS at 6,000rpm, similar to the Toyota Vios. The higher end model comes with the new, with 1.8-litre unit producing 136PS at 6,000rpm and 175Nm of torque at 4,400rpm.

The car is expected to hit showrooms by next year.

The other big news at Toyota happens to be that the company has announced that by 2015, it wants to ramp up its production to six lakh units. However, the major catalyst for reaching these targets will be the new small car which is on the cards. It will compete against the likes of the Getz and the Swift when launched.

The Aveo sedan sure looks much more macho than its hatched sibling the U-VA. That’s because the U-VA is based on the previous generation Kalos. Long on the cards it was – and finally the pictures of the 2008 Chevy Aveo are out.

Needles to say, it now shares its platform with its sedan counterpart. The new Aveo comes with a radically different front end. A large two-tier grille dominates the front end and it’s here that the bow-tie takes prominent place. The grille (which looks very Audi-ish) combined with the rakish bonnet line gives a bull bar effect. The central line added to the bonnet gives it more style.

The headlamps add to that aggressive appeal while looking strikingly similar to those of the SX4. a small plastic grille is added to the fender for sporty appeal. The sill line is similar to that of the sedan. In wake of our last month’s Spark upgrade story, the new Aveo too will sport rounded tail lamps instead of the big boxy units now. Interiors too have been spruced up to go with the radically different exterior.

Powering the Aveo will be two petrol motors. First there’s a 1.4 litre unit, which develops 98PS and then there’s a frugal 1.2 unit churning out 84PS. However in India get ready for a detuned engine considering our very own UVA does 76PS.

The debut of the new Aveo is scheduled to happen in the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year and will be launched in the European market as early as March 2008. We expect the Indian launch to happen in a month or two after that. As for the price, expect a little hike.

So if had been complaining about the sedate looks of the UVA, look no further, the devil’s here.

While buying a car or a two-wheeler, do you know what mileage you ought to get from the vehicle? The fact is, you don't. That's because manufacturers aren't required to provide you the information though some companies give out confusing figures asterisked with the "under test condition" label in small print.

That is set to change within two years. The government has decided to set up mandatory fuel efficiency standards for all class and type of vehicles, inculding cars, scooters, bikes, trucks, buses and three-wheelers.

The fuel efficiency standard would be li8ke a certificate promising a certain range of kilometers per liter of fuel that you could expect from the vehicle. Manufacturers could be penalised if their vehicles fail to meet these norms.

While developed countries such as the US and Japan and those in Europe have done this long ago, and China has set up stringent norms recently. India's belated attempt at helping consumers save money as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions has come not a day too late.

Government projects the country could save up to $36 billion if fuel efficiency is improved by 50% by 2030 in all sectors. With as much as 98% of total petrol stock and 62% of diesel used for transportation, a mandatory fuel efficiency standard will obviously turn into a huge money saver for consumers.

Besides, progressive standards will also force the industry to improve car engines and not allow them to sell outdated and inefficient designs being phased out in richer countries. "We now have the legal mandate to bring standards and they will be put in place in less than two years. We want to move fast on this and want the industry to participate constructively in the process," Sanjeev Capoor, executive director of Petroleum Conservation Research Association, said on Thursday at a gathering of experts and industry representatives on the issue.

PCRA has signed an MoU with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to bring out the standards. On Thursday, it set up a technical panel t resolve certain issues besides setting up a steering committee to fast-tracd the move. The industry doesn't seem too keen on the standards at the moment though it is overtly committed to the move.

Rhino Rx, new entrant in multi-utility vehicle segment

In an effort to create a niche in the overcrowded multi-utility vehicle market in India, International Car and Motors Ltd (ICML), a part of the Sonalika Group, launched the Rhino Rx here Thursday.

'With the launch of this car we will set a totally new paradigm and highest standards for multi-utility vehicles in the country,' said L.D. Mittal, chairperson of the company, better known for its tractors and farm machinery.

'Our vehicle is targeted at commercial users and family segment,' Mittal told a press conference, adding that it would give tough competition to Chevrolet's Tavera and Mahindra and Mahindra's Scorpio and Bolero.

Fitted with a Rover diesel engine, the new Rhino Rx can attain a speed of 100 km an hour in less than 16 seconds, company officials said.

The vehicle has five-speed transmission and direct turbo charged inter-cooled engine and will be available in three variants - S1, S2, D1. To begin with, the launch has been planned in four states, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

The Rhino variants are available in both single AC and double AC models and come in a price range of Rs.585,000-Rs.695,000 ($14,600-$17,300). The car has been designed in collaboration with Britain-based Lotus Engineering and is customised for Indian roads.

'The unique selling proposition of this car is its pricing and the engine. Our factory is located in a tax-free zone,' Mittal said, adding that the company has been able to cut prices by almost 25 percent.

The company plans to sell 10,000 units from its plant at Amb in Himachal Pradesh by the end of this year and more than double the capacity next year.
'At present, the production capacity is 24,000 units. By next year, we plan to double the capacity by investing Rs.400 crore (Rs.4 billion),' said Mittal. 'The car will be available through 200 dealers all throughout the country soon.'
ICML also plans to launch a sports utility vehicle by 2010. 'We have already started talks with some European carmakers but I can't disclose the names now,' Mittal said.

Coming soon! Hithane vehicles on Indian roads

A two-year project that will enable light commercial vehicles, cars and auto rickshaws to run on a blend of hydrogen and CNG was launched on Wednesday. An MoU was inked by the ministry of new & renewable energy (MNRE), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Indian Oil Corp for the purpose.

This project would develop an optimal mix of hydrogen and CNG (called hithane) by experimenting with up to 30 per cent hydrogen mixed into CNG.

Other than Indian Oil, the project involves five vehicle manufacturers: Ashok Leyland, Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.

At the end of the project, which is scheduled to be completed in 24 months, detailed recommendations would be made. The project entails investment of between Rs 10-12 crore, of which Rs three crore would come from the Centre and another Rs 3 crore from Indian Oil Corp. The remaining money would be put in by the five vehicle makers.

Three LCVs, one car, one utility vehicle and two- and three-wheelers would be developed and tested with different blends of hithane to arrive at an optimum blend; this would enable existing vehicle fleets to be suitably modified for using hithane instead of pure CNG.

SIAM secretary general Dilip Chenoy said that world over, vehicle makers are looking for ways to use hydrogen fuel in new products, but this project seeks to develop for the first time ever a CNG-hydrogen mixture for use in the existing on-road fleet of vehicles with minimum modifications in the engine and engine components.

The participating companies are providing seven different types of vehicles for the purpose: three light commercial vehicles, two three-wheelers, a sports utility vehicle and a passenger car. Each vehicle would be first tested on blends of between 10-30 per cent hydrogen to get to the optimum blend that reduces emissions and achieves the desired fuel supply sustainability. This blend will be used to modify vehicle engines for optimum performance with the new fuel.

But why hithane? Hithane not only reduces dependence on foreign oil but also cuts down on nitrous oxide emissions and helps achieve better fuel efficiency.

Volvo is lining up its luxury cars to Indian roads in 2009

Volvo Car Corp aims to be a serious player in India's luxury car market, which it expects to more than double by 2009, mirroring the trend of rapid expansion in other emerging markets, its country head said.

The unit of Ford Motor Co is launching its S80 sedan and XC90 sport utility in petrol and diesel variants, priced at 3.8-5.2 million rupees ($93,137-$127,451), and expects to have a network of about a dozen dealers by end-2008.

The vehicles will be imported as completely built units from Sweden and Volvo will decide in a year's time if the market is big enough to support an assembly unit, Paul de Voijs said.

"We see the luxury car market here more than doubling by 2009 on organic growth, upgraders, new launches and because the segment grows faster in emerging markets," he said. "You only need to see markets like China and Russia for evidence," he said at a news conference to unveil the vehicles.

A decision to assemble vehicles in India would be made with Ford, which now provides back-end support to Volvo. Ford, which set up operations in India in 1995, makes 60,000 vehicles a year at its plant in the southern city of Chennai.

The luxury car segment, which de Voijs defines as upward of 2.5 million rupees, will see sales of about 4,000 units this year, a 30 percent increase over the previous year, he said.

There may even be a demand for niche products like convertibles, but de Voijs expects that there will be greater demand for its sedans in India, where annual passenger vehicle sales are expected to nearly double to 2 million units by 2010.

BMW , DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen are all stepping up production of their premium cars in India, where the number of wealthy individuals grew at the second fastest pace in the world in 2006, according to a study by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini.

Volvo's launch in India was pushed back by nearly a year on delays in obtaining approvals for imports, and its plan for India seems modest in comparison to China, where it built and sold more than 7,000 of its S40 sedans in 2006.

Volvo has said China could become its No. 2 market in the next 10 years. It also assembles cars in Malaysia and Thailand.

Still, de Voijs believes its India entry was timed right. "There's a lot of wealth to be tapped in India," he said.

"Rather than bring in 12 models from the start, we are going at a more measured pace, but we're certainly committed to staying in this market," he said.

Volvo launched S80 sedan & XC90 suv to Indian market

Swedish car major Volvo Car Corporation on Thursday forayed into the Indian market with two flagship products - S80 sedan and sports utility vehicle XC90 SUV at starting prices of Rs 38 lakh and Rs 45 lakh respectively.

The company has introduced two petrol (3.2 litre and 4.4 litre) and one diesel (2.5 litre) variants in both the models.

"India is a very exciting market and the luxury car segment is growing exponentially here. Now is the perfect moment for us to enter the market," Mr Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Car India said here.
He said the company would start operations in India with three dealerships in Chandigarh, Mumbai and Delhi and would scale it up to 9 by the end of 2008. "The company would initially have three dealerships. We are in talks with 7-9 additional dealers ac ross the country which might come up by the end of 2008," he added.

The company will be importing the products as completely built units (CBUs) from its manufacturing plant in Sweden.

While the S80 sedan petrol variant will be priced at Rs 38 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the diesel variant will be cheaper by Rs one lakh. Similarly, petrol version of SUV X90 will come for Rs 46 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and the diesel version will cost Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The S80 sedan would be pitched against BMW's 5-series (priced around Rs 37-42 lakh) while the SUV XC90 will compete with the likes of Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes M Class (in the Rs 60 lakh plus category).

Mr Voijs, however, did not divulge the company's sales targets in India during the current fiscal. "We want to study the market in the first year and would then review our business model," he said. Volvo passenger car business is owned by US-based auto major Ford Motor Co.

UK-based luxury car major Bentley Motors today launched its two super-luxury cars in convertible motors' segment in India.

Bentley's two new convertibles -- "Azure" priced at Rs 3.80 crore (ex-showroom) and "Continental GTC" for Rs 2.10 crore (ex-showroom) -- will be available only at its show-room in New Delhi.

Announcing the launch, Company's Regional Sales Manager (Middle East, Africa and India) Ian Hession said, "We are targeting to sell at least 25 cars every year in the Indian market." Bentley, since it first hit the India market in October 2003, has sold more than 40 cars in the
super-luxury segment.

The company, with its only one manufacturing plant in England, has a 6-7 per cent car-market potential in South Asia for its brand, Hession added.

Indian partner Exclusive Motors's Managing Director Satya Bagla said, "We are excited about bringing this international driving experience to the discerning Indian 'convertible' motoring enthusiasts."

According to the company, Brentley Azure, equipped with V-8 6.75 litre twin turbo-charged engine having torque generating capacity of 875 Nm, is capable to accelerate at the speed from 0-100 km/hour within 5.6 seconds.

Similarly, 'Continental GTC' is equipped with 6.0 litre twin-turbo charged engine which propels the car from 0-90 km/hour within 4.8 seconds.

Both the cars, fitted with electro-hydraulically operated soft-top roof, have elite interior with standard craftmanship, utilising natural wood veneers and leather hides of finest quality.

The company is also planning to set up another showroom in Mumbai by the end of 2009.

The Suzuki Motorcycle India on Monday unveiled its 125 cc gearless scooter 'Access' and marked its foray into the Indian scooter market. The company has plans to capture four per cent share of the country's two-wheeler market in the next three years.

A mid-sized scooter, Access 125 is sporty is powered by a 125cc air cooled, 4-stroke engine and automatic transmission. Its attractive and aerodynamic styling also assures of a rust free body thus reducing maintenance expenses.

In addition to its sporty, design, Suzuki Access 125 is equipped with features such as Xtra torque performance (XTP) for enhanced performance and excellent riding quality and a central locking system with unique shutter mechanism for a single control point for the entire machine.

"For 20 years, we have looked at motorcycles as the sole mode of semi-urban and rural transportation. We will see a paradigm shift back to scooter market with the improvement in infrastructure," Sheel said. The company is aiming to sell nearly 5,000 units of Access a month initially and will be announcing the price after a pan-India roll-out within two weeks time.

There was display of a new product at the Tata stand in Bologna was an all-new pick-up dubbed the TL Sprint. Based on the 207’s chassis, the Sprint is a brilliantly-styled, four-wheel-drive double-cab. A single-cab version is also available. The Sprint is powered by the same 2.2-litre common-rail diesel that powers the Safari but the Sprint TL will only be sold in Europe initially, in Spring 2007, by which time it will get a new name.

Maruti’s Swift sedan coming early next year

India’s largest car maker, Maruti Udyog Ltd, is getting set for the launch in 2008 of a mid-size sedan built around its new global car platform, the Swift. The new car, to be launched in January-February, will give the manufacturer renewed presence in the budget segment of the domestic sedan market, where newer, more contemporary models from competitors have edged out its Esteem model.

A person close to the development said the company would launch Swift with its new-generation 1.3-litre multi–jet diesel engine and in a 1.3-litre petrol variant, priced at around Rs5.5 lakh. Maruti officials declined to comment on future models.

MUL’s long-standing Esteem sedan has been witnessing flagging sales in the last few years. The model sold little more than 6,000 units in April-July, down from 7,011 units in the year-ago period. The model is currently available for about Rs4.5 lakh, depending on the features included, but suffers from what analysts call model fatigue.
The car, however, continues to win critical acclaim, including last year’s JD Power best entry-sedan award.

Maruti already has two diesel variants of premium hatchback Swift and a petrol offering on the same platform since its launch late last year.
The launch of the Swift sedan will strengthen the company’s presence in the sedan market.

Volkswagen Jetta coming to India next year, German automaker Volkswagen is expanding their presence in the Indian market. They have now announced their plans to launch the Jetta sedan in India sometime next year.

Andreas Prinz, managing director, Volkswagen India added that they plan to price this car competitively for the Indian market. They are going to challenge existing models in this segment of the market including Hyundai Verna, the Maruti Suzuki SX4 and the Ford Fiesta.
They are expected to launch both petrol and diesel models of Jetta in India.
VW is already scheduled to launch their first Indian-assembled car, the Passat in September this year.

The New TVS Flame 125cc

Battered by interest rates and left behind by competition, the country’s third largest two wheeler manufacturer unveiled three new bikes and a scooter and forayed into three wheeler segment ushering in a “new era for the company”. TVS Motor’s sales slid by 10 per cent in the first half of this fiscal and today’s product blitz seeks to plug loopholes in its marketing strategy after the phaseout of its once bestselling Victor, and prepare the company to withstand the a competition that’s getting more aggressive every quarter.
The company unveiled its new 125cc Flame that replaces Victor along with a fuel injected 160cc Apache RTR and a refurbished 110cc entry level Star City covering the whole spectrum of the motorcycle segment. It also forays into new territories like three wheelers with the launch of a petrol, CNG and LPG driven variants as also an electric powered version of its popular scooterette Scooty Teenz Electric. While the Star City will see a phased launch across the country beginning tomorrow, the three wheelers will make their debut by the middle of next month and the bikes and scooter will hit the market only by November.

“This is a year of a new TVS and today’s product roll out which is the biggest in the automotive history is the result of a long drawn out planning,” said Venu Srinivasan, chairman and managing director, TVS. “With modern technology and a completely new range of products coupled with new branding in our offices, plant, advertising and branding, the market will wake up to a new face of the company.”
The spate of launches however does not end with this. In the horizon are CNG LPG powered motorcycles, hybrids and another new platform of three wheelers. “Alternate fuel technologies are high on our agenda and we have started the process with the Scooty Teenz. We have motorcycles which would run on CNG ready with us but it will be rolled out only by February-March next year,” Srinivasan said. “These bikes will have huge benefits by way of 60 per cent lower running costs and 50 per cent lower emissions.”
While the company is taking competition head-on while showcasing its technological might, a lot will depend on the success or failure of Flame in the executive segment which commands a large share of the market. “We do not have a product in the executive segment which makes us non existent in almost 50 per cent of the market. We expect the Flame to churn in the numbers just like Star City and Apache in their respective segments,” said KN Radhakrishnan, president, TVS.
After witnessing depressing sales in the first half of this fiscal, the company expects a flat third quarter but will be back in the positive growth territory in the last quarter. “Our launches will be complete by next year and in the last quarter we expect to grow by 15 per cent to round off the fiscal on a positive note,” Srinivasan said.
